Ready to be petty?

Let’s get petty.

If there is one phrase that could sum up my frustration this year it is “weaponized incompetence.” I missed SIX class days because I was out with COVID, and when I returned the work, around 70% of the assignments were not turned in. I was frustrated because the work I left was not challenging, but I knew when I addressed it with my students, they would respond with “I didn’t get it.” I had an excellent, consistent sub for the week who would have happily helped them. They simply did not want to work, so they feigned incompetence to avoid the work. As a result, when I returned, I chose pettiness. I assigned an assignment that made them define and paraphrase incompetence and then apply it to their own behavior. Were there some kids that still didn’t give a crap? Of course. However, there were also plenty of kids that DID care, apologized, and got their work turned in.
